We often run into the “common sense” trap. Most people understand basics are vital for success but assume someone else must have already covered it, so they don’t share their knowledge.
As a beginner we don’t yet have the basis to know what we don’t know. If our mentor isn’t a strong teacher we may be left to discover the basics on our own.
Since it’s not talked about as often it may seem unimportant. Of course, the opposite is true. Fundamentals are so critical, but they are rarely discussed because people assume everyone understands this truth.
Example: New Management appointments. You will find that many manager appointments do not have standards in place for individual and team reviews as well as many other basic management routines. It all depends on the experience and skill of the person appointed and the handover is often very limited. When basic management standards with training are put in place each new appointed manager or acting manager can maintain the previous standard on which they can then only improve.
